About
Trae Stewart is a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and a professor of nursing at MCPHS, where he also serves as the coordinator of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track. In addition to his academic role, he provides virtual psychiatric care for clients aged 13 and older in Nevada, Oregon, and Washington through his private practice, PsychMatters. Before establishing his practice, he worked as a nurse in an acute psychiatric unit at the Cleveland Clinic.
With extensive teaching experience, Dr. Stewart has instructed nearly three dozen courses in various formats, covering topics such as nursing theory, evidence-based research, mental health nursing, psychopharmacology, and clinical practicum. His research contributions include more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as a dozen creative works. His scholarship has been featured in American Nurse Journal, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, Nursing Science Quarterly, Adult Learning, Teaching and Learning in Medicine, and Development in Practice. In 2024, he authored a study guide and workbook for PMHNP certification (Springer International), which is complemented by a flashcard set and ANCC board certification app. He has also presented at nearly 50 international conferences and is currently under contract with Taylor & Francis (Routledge) to publish a book on uncommon psychiatric disorders.
A two-time Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Stewart has received numerous research awards, fellowships, and international consulting invitations. His consulting work includes youth leadership projects in Palestine and Afghanistan, where he has focused on social entrepreneurship, public health, and service-learning. He has also volunteered in psychiatric and methadone clinics in Tanzania. As a question writer for both the NCLEX and PMHNP board exams, he contributes to nursing education on a national level. Additionally, he delivers continuing education workshops through Fitzgerald Health Education Associates.
Committed to advancing nursing and mental health education globally, Dr. Stewart is an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Association for Men in Nursing, and the American Nurses Association. He welcomes opportunities for international collaboration and consultation.
