About

Dr. Kiel is a pioneering pharmacologist known for his discovery and characterization of ago-allosteric modulators—compounds that enhance the effects of endogenous ligands while independently activating receptors. His groundbreaking research identified the first such compounds targeting the human GLP-1 receptor, contributing to the development of orally available medications for this receptor.

In collaboration with students, Dr. Kiel conducted studies demonstrating the potential of GLP-1 to improve neural deficits in rat models of peripheral neuropathy. His research also explored biased signaling in commercially available GLP-1 agonists, advancing understanding of their therapeutic potential.

An esteemed educator, Dr. Kiel has been recognized as Teacher of the Year five times by his department, a distinction awarded by students for his outstanding teaching and mentorship.
