Creating a World of Opportunity for Students

In addition to sending students abroad, we bring students from around the world to MCPHS to study. Our international collaborations allow us to connect with prospective students in many different countries.

A Global Perspective

The initial outreach in Cuba inspired faculty members to start programs in Peru and Morocco. Students flowed to MCPHS from these countries. As the momentum continued to build, our international student population grew from less than 1% to about 15%. Today, we are proud to have more than 1,000 international students from more than 90 different countries. And we have supports in place to help them thrive – including through our Center for International Studies.

We’re expanding our global reach for a reason. Compassionate care requires empathy and understanding. We embrace diversity because the exchange of ideas that comes with it benefits all involved – starting with the patients we serve. It fosters appreciation for differences. It also exposes students to perspectives that will help them think through and address grand challenges in healthcare. We prepare leaders who can influence organizations and systems. It’s helpful for them to have knowledge of a variety of countries’ models, each with its own strengths.

Healthcare is done differently in the U.S. as compared to other countries. Discussing such issues with students gives them a global perspective. Our faculty incorporate this into their teaching. They get students to work in groups to discuss the healthcare issues and challenges if someone's coming from, let's say, India versus Europe.

Our alumni are making a difference in more and more places. We have a growing number of students from India, for example, who return to serve their local communities after they graduate. In a country of more than 1.4 billion people, the efforts to make healthcare work for more people take on heightened significance.

It’s progress in motion, and it’s happening on multiple continents. We’re bridging gaps and empowering the global healthcare system.
