Boston Campus Holds 141st Commencement
More than 500 students received degrees at the 141st Commencement of the MCPHS-Boston campus at the Seaport World Trace Center in Boston on May 15.
Michael F. Collins, Chancellor of University of Massachusetts Medical School, delivered the Commencement address and also received an honorary degree from MCPHS President Charles F. Monahan Jr. In his remarks, Dr. Collins asked the graduates to take stock of the crucial role they will play in the delivery of quality health care. “Imagine how much impact you could have on hundreds of lives if you acted selflessly throughout your career, remembering that a health care professional’s greatest privilege is to serve people,” he said. “That selfless dedication, not money, is what should motivate you.”
Brian Perl, a graduating PharmD student from Saugus, California, delivered the student address. A member of Phi Lamda Sigma, the Massachusetts Pharmacists Association and the California Pharmacists Association, Brian has served on the Executive Board of the Student Government Association and APhA and has served as a class representative for three years. After graduation, Brian will be moving back to California where he work for CVS/Pharmacy. In his speech, Perl noted the important health care roles he and his fellow graduates will play in communities across the country and across the world. “The public will admire you even though there may be moments when it doesn’t feel like it,” Perl said. “Keep your head held high and always represent your profession with immense pride, dignity, and of course, charisma.”
Richard Lessard, MCPHS Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, was awarded the College Medal in recognition of his 11 years of service and his stewardship of the College’s building program.
Dorothea Rudorf, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, was presented with the Trustees’ Award for Teaching Excellence.
Presiding over the presentation of degree candidates were Michelle Kalis, Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost and Jean Joyce-Brady, Dean of Students. Serving as College Marshals were: Joyce-Brady, Paul Kiritsy, Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice; Janet Hart, Assistant Professor, Arts and Sciences; Susan Jenkins, Assistant Professor, Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene; and George Humphrey, Vice President for College Relations.
